Garden Design
Visitors to Doyle & Bond, the opulent new garden centre on West Saanich Road on Victoria’s outskirts, may notice a lean, wiry figure in perpetual motion—in the gardens, on the tractor, in the greenhouse.
Step right up and meet D & B partner Rob Bond.
Victoria-based garden designer Bond burst upon the national scene with a seven-page spread in the May, 2009 edition of Canadian Gardening magazine.
The feature focused on the complex, compact garden Bond had designed for himself and his family on BC’s Saanich Peninsula. Bond’s work has also been featured extensively in the Victoria Times Colonist, the BC capital’s daily newspaper.
As great chefs seed their passion as children in their mother’s kitchens, Bond’s deep love of growing things began as a five-year-old in his grandmother’s Calgary garden. As a boy on the verge of adolescence, his cherished possession was neither bicycle nor hockey stick. It was a greenhouse.
Bond earned a diploma in horticulture from Alberta’s Olds College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Landscape Architecture from Washington State University. “But it isn’t the formal education that counts,” he says. “It’s the hands-on experience, the love of it, the imagining, the creating. When customers catch up with me, they can’t shut me up about gardening.”
